Sichuan Institute of Atomic Energy (SIAE), a professional institute located in Chengdu, is engaged in the peaceful use of atomic energy with more than 100 hundred scientists and engineers. There are five research departments in SIAE carrying out studies on food safety, food irradiation preservation technology, environment protection against heavy metal and radioactive pollution, new materials for medical and agricultural application, as well as plant breeding science and genetics. SIAE has a Co60 facility with 2 million Ci and an electron beam accelerator of 2 MeV for research and technology transfer. In recent years, the Key Laboratory of Food Irradiation Preservation of Sichuan Province and the Innovation Center for Peaceful Use of Nuclear Technology have been established to improve foods safety during processing and preservation. SIAE has received more than 150 grants from state and International Atomic Energy Agency, and one international achievement award from International Atomic Energy Agency of UN, and 42 technical progress awards from governments. SIAE plays an important role in the peaceful use of atomic energy in China and has been making great contribution to the public education of atomic energy for peace and the development of the economy.
